@sanmccarron It has been amazing. I have made the past two flybys, and if invited back will be broadcasting at MESSENGER’s orbital insertion [porchdragon]
![]() |
Packing to return home tomorrow. Tiring week but forever memorable. Now back to real life [porchdragon]
![]() |
Back online if anyone has any final MESSENGER questions [porchdragon]
![]() |
@zandperl I don’t think so, but it may need special metal thread screens for reflecting polarized light. [porchdragon]
![]() |
@mathrocker10 Hi Kelsey do you have a question? [porchdragon]
![]() |
@turrean and sitting! Boy am I tired [porchdragon]
![]() |
I am slowly becoming the last Fellow here. Soon to go to Public talk and will resume MESSENGER talk tonight 4 anyone who wants to [porchdragon]
![]() |
Invites are going super fast! @GoogleWaveNow ! RT & Follow ! Last invites to be randomly given to followers. #googlewave #wave [porchdragon]
![]() |
This going to my last 1/2 hour at MESSENGER SOC. Any last minute questions for scientists to answer? [porchdragon]
![]() |
@vickitoria35 Hello from a physics teacher currently tweeting from NASA MESSENGER HDQTRs! [porchdragon]
![]() |
heheh lost a follower so I only have 665 followers now. OK new rule 4 followers. U must join in pairs for the next 24 hours. Just in case [porchdragon]
![]() |
Is there a way to find out if something was ever a trending topic on Twitter? [porchdragon]
![]() |
If they put these images on the site, I am going to have to find a source for red/blue glasses for my classes [porchdragon]
![]() |
This is so funny. I was just wondering this morning if they could make 3d images and then they surprised us with this [porchdragon]
![]() |
@fallapart lol just tweeted how. Made post from 2 diff flybys [porchdragon]
![]() |
3d images were created by images from Flyby 1 and Fly 3. they came in at diff angles [porchdragon]
![]() |
These 3d images MUST be shared on the MESSENGER website. I will ask… [porchdragon]
![]() |
@spidersensed Never! [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Melanie42 LOL! I was wondering if ppl would realize i could just get more! LOL [porchdragon]
![]() |
Everyone @ science team meeting have red/blue 3d glasses looking at 3d image of Mercury’s craters. AWESOME! [porchdragon]
![]() |
Here is the “paw print” http://bit.ly/nIMRW [porchdragon]
![]() |
Very happy 4 my fellow Fellows who worked on official description of a set of craters on Mercury. They described a “paw print” they liked. [porchdragon]

@aschwortz Cool! I can use this in my next talk to the 2nd graders! ;^b [porchdragon]
![]() |
Having a meeting about how 2 better connect next MESSENGER event 2 teachers.(entering orbit) Any ideas? [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Room508AESchool Mercury is close to the sun compared 2 Earth, but still far away. Sunlight is only 11 times stronger. So it has an umbrella [porchdragon]
![]() |
Sorry to say I have to cancel my 2:30 broadcast due to a meeting. I will arrange broadcasts after tomorrow if a class has more questions. [porchdragon]
![]() |
@aschwortz relationship between 3/2 resonance and elliptical orbit is unknown [porchdragon]
![]() |
giving up laptop for a bit so another teacher can Skype to a class. Please send questions and I will get back to you [porchdragon]
![]() |
Welcome to all my new followers. 30+ since yesterday! If you have MESSENGER questions, feel free to ask questions. [porchdragon]

Talking with a geophysicist about Mercury’s 3:2 rot/rev resonance. Questions Anyone? [porchdragon]
![]() |
@TaviGreiner NP [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Room508AESchool Just realized that I may have given wrong impression in last answer. MESSENGER would keep working but it would struggle [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Melanie42 thanks! I am enjoying doing this for kids [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Room508AESchool Got the scientists thinking on that one!Yes-but engineers would have 2 work hard 2 keep the other from overheating [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Nancy_A absolutely [porchdragon]
![]() |
@aschwortz about 2.5 minutes [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Nancy_A thanks! you watched again? [porchdragon]

September 30th |
@turrean Ouch! [porchdragon]
![]() |
@NASA_SDO_Edu YesI follow him. When I get back I will chat with him about ideas [porchdragon]
![]() |
@NASA_SDO_Edu You are right. it is mostly potential now but needs ppl 2 push it forward and 2 think & follow it through. [porchdragon]
![]() |
was talking w/ @doctorjeff earlier. Do teachers have ideas 4 NASA & others on how 2 use social media to include teachers w/ real science? [porchdragon]
![]() |
@lindseyb16 Thx :^) [porchdragon]
![]() |
@turrean LOL! [porchdragon]
![]() |
@zandperl would have been even cooler if all of the image had been taken. But like 1 scientist said”All that was just icing on cake anyway” [porchdragon]
![]() |
@gardenglen It has been a blast. Exhausting, but a blast [porchdragon]
![]() |
@aschwortz is that in response to my earlier request for how to get our message out? [porchdragon]
![]() |
@gardenglen some very cool images from the approach. More to come! [porchdragon]
![]() |
Newest MESSENGER image shows a pit crater. Scientists are intrigued by it. http://tinyurl.com/y8hc3up [porchdragon]
![]() |
@zandperl yeah they were being published as soon as the science team analyzed them. Fellows were writing some of the text [porchdragon]
![]() |
@zandperl LOL! I know. I was talking w/Dan this summer and I kept thinking of you as Zandperl.Whenever he said your name, I was confused [porchdragon]
![]() |
@turrean It’s all significant to me! [porchdragon]
![]() |
@dmoren can’t be a good joke if you want me to take it seriously [porchdragon]
![]() |
@vballchick100 yup! [porchdragon]
![]() |
@vballchick100 Check out the MESSENGER website. I can help you understand anything 2 complicated http://messenger.jhuapl.edu/index.php [porchdragon]
![]() |
@vballchick100 MSNGR doesnt get 2 close 2 Sun.Divide room into 10 parts.Earth is on 1 wall.Sun on the other.Mercury is 3 parts away from Sun [porchdragon]
![]() |
Anyone have any suggestions 4 helping NASA get its education message out 2 teachers and students using Soc Media tools like twitter? [porchdragon]
![]() |
@brianshiro Nice! Mine too! [porchdragon]
![]() |
@AdrianusV thanks! [porchdragon]
![]() |
@brianshiro thanks for the follow! Sounds like you are into space science! [porchdragon]
![]() |
Had an interesting conversation today w/ @doctorjeff about the power of twitter to present NASA’s ed message to the world. Any suggestions? [porchdragon]
![]() |
@robinlloyd99 thanks for the follow! Hopefully I can provide some useful info [porchdragon]
![]() |
@turrean It’s been intense. Second video went well but did not record. I will record tomorrow [porchdragon]
![]() |
@turrean Boy do i agree with that!! [porchdragon]

For my new followers. Please my blog post on the atmosphere surrounding last nite’s flyby event. http://dragonphysics.wordpress.com/ [porchdragon]
![]() |
I want to welcome the 100+ new followers that I have gained in just the past few days. Hope you are enjoying my MESSENGER Flyby coverage [porchdragon]
![]() |
We use crater counts 2 tell us planets age.Recent volcanic activity would’ve erased craters so we feel that we have a good etsimate of age [porchdragon]
![]() |
listening to a new way to figure age of Mercury’s surface [porchdragon]
![]() |
Interesting images of tectonic features. [porchdragon]
![]() |
Scarps are created when planet cools and part of surface “falls” leaving incredible tall cliffs. These scarps can cut right through craters [porchdragon]
![]() |
seeing more evidence of lobate scarps on Mercury. “Mercury: The Incredible Shrinking Planet!” [porchdragon]
![]() |
shadow studies are an important for planetary science understanding. And a lot of it is basic trig [porchdragon]
![]() |
Important to note that looking at the terminator(day/night) line on a planet helps see small details because shadows are so long [porchdragon]
![]() |
Currently looking at a “depression” seen in the new images [porchdragon]
![]() |
some ppl(like me) can make a crater seem to “pop” into a hill just by concentrating [porchdragon]
![]() |
Try this. Look at any crater image from moon or mercury and turn pic around. Craters seem to”pop” out and become hills. Well known illusion [porchdragon]
![]() |
looking at images. Love doing the crater/mountain illusion with images [porchdragon]
![]() |
looking at first mosaics of images and heightened color images of Mercury [porchdragon]
![]() |
Being introduced to entire science team [porchdragon]
![]() |
About to tweet through MESSENGER Briefing [porchdragon]
![]() |
RT: @doctorjeff: Did you know: Mercury rotates so slowly that if you walked leisurely forever westward, you’d never seen the Sun set. [porchdragon]
![]() |
Finally back on twitter after my earlier broadcast. My computer was being used by others to broadcast since it was already setup & checked [porchdragon]
![]() |
@lionsima thank you! [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Room508AESchool new 5% has a few interesting spots that scientists are looking at. You can look at some pics http://tinyurl.com/yocdr6 [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Room508AESchool Mercury is about 2/3 metals(iron & some nickel) Most of this is in the core of the planet. [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Melanie42 thank you i will be broadcasting again tomorrow [porchdragon]
![]() |
Broadcasting live now! See me at http://bit.ly/bQU3w [porchdragon]

Watch video here: http://bit.ly/f4tWM [porchdragon]
![]() |
Another call to anyone who wants to watch my video broadcast about MESSENGER. I will begin broadcasting in 5 minutes [porchdragon]
![]() |
I will be answering questions live on video from 2nd graders at 1pm EST Please join us! http://tinyurl.com/ybossco [porchdragon]
![]() |
Did you know that scientists use basic trig to determine the depth of craters by measuring legth of shadow and knowing angle of the sun [porchdragon]
![]() |
Any1 who wants 2 ask questions during my video please ask!Broadcast starts @ 1PM EST . It should work this time! http://tinyurl.com/ybossco [porchdragon]
![]() |
Take a look at some of the images from this flyby. http://messenger.jhuapl.edu/gallery/sciencePhotos/ [porchdragon]
![]() |
Remember to also check out @doctorjeff He is explaining in detail what happened during the flyby [porchdragon]
![]() |
Cool! My blog was quoted in a news announcement! http://bit.ly/18ah1r [porchdragon]
![]() |
For those interested: I will be broadcasting live on ustream at 1 pm. Broadcast works now. URL 2 come. [porchdragon]
![]() |
Important note: MESSENGER is safe.It did what it was supposed 2 do & went into Safemode 2 make sure nothing bad happened. Now we figure out Y [porchdragon]
![]() |
Except for the poles we now have images of the entire body of Mercury. Only 5% left 2 image @ poles [porchdragon]
![]() |
![]() |
A little less than 1/2 of “extra” science goals 4 flyby was accomplished. So we just got a little less icing on our “Flyby Cake” [porchdragon]
![]() |
@queechies yes [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Room508AESchool Teams R looking @ the images now & checking them for any interesting features B4 they publish them so they can answer q’s. [porchdragon]
![]() |
Mission Ops team worked throughout the night to figure out what happen 2 MESSENGER. They are now pretty sure WHAT happened but not WHY. [porchdragon]
![]() |
@turrean Any chance of setting up a time for anyone who wants it? [porchdragon]
![]() |
from briefing:Flyby’s major goal of gravity assist was a total success. As was getting images of 5% of Mercury never seen before! [porchdragon]
![]() |
From new briefing: MESSENGER went into safemode when it entered Mercury’s shadow & tried to switch 2 battery power. [porchdragon]
![]() |
Ustream is fixed now so that my 2pm EST video broadcast WILL work [porchdragon]
![]() |
I am so sorry this video program did not get out. People are furiously working on it. But no one can find the problem [porchdragon]
![]() |
@zandperl Nice [porchdragon]
![]() |
@turrean I am so sorry. We thought this was checked [porchdragon]
![]() |
2 way communication through Ustream is somehow being blocked and so I cannot broadcast out [porchdragon]
![]() |
sorry folks this broadcast will not start on time. [porchdragon]
![]() |
@turrean can we skype instead? [porchdragon]
![]() |
The feeling in my stomach is getting worse as this ustream problem is continuing [porchdragon]
![]() |
trying to fix ustream before my 10:45 deadline… [porchdragon]
![]() |
Ustream is having difficulties. we are working on it for my broadcast [porchdragon]
![]() |
@turrean Having difficulties right now. working on it [porchdragon]
![]() |
Thx everyone for the RT! [porchdragon]
![]() |
@raychelrawrr No tweeting in school! [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Room508AESchool By the way, I will explain that more in my video @ 10:45 EST today. can you watch? http://tinyurl.com/ybossco [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Room508AESchool MESSENGER has a “umbrella” that is keeping it in the shade. The sunshade is made from ceramic thread.Think coffee cup stuff [porchdragon]
![]() |
For those who wish they could have been @ MESSENGER flyby Read my post. It was amazing being here! http://dragonphysics.wordpress.com/ [porchdragon]
![]() |
RT: @elakdawalla: 2 all MESSENGER fans:Disappointing as safe mode is,remember prime purpose of flyby was grav assist, which was accomplished. [porchdragon]
![]() |
@elakdawalla Great point about the Grav assist! [porchdragon]
![]() |
For anyone interested. I will be doing a 15 minvideo broadcast @ 10:45 EST. This is aimed at 2nd graders. Pls RT! http://tinyurl.com/ybossco [porchdragon]
![]() |
Just found out that there will be a mission briefing for scientists and fellows at 11. I will be doing a video broadcast @ 10:45 beforehand [porchdragon]
![]() |
Watching scientists looking at the pics from approach. These are the only images we will get from this flyby.Pics being chosen 4 release [porchdragon]
![]() |
@queechies no this would have been the closest approach. [porchdragon]
![]() |
Compared to last year’s flyby, this place is like a morgue. I feel awful for the scientists who are disappointed. [porchdragon]
![]() |
MESSENGER scientists & engineers are investigating cause(s). No answers as of yet. [porchdragon]
![]() |
Newest MESSENGER news: Craft went into safemode B4 closest approach of Mercury. No data or pics were obtained after entering Safemode. [porchdragon]
![]() |
Just was told I misnamed the MESSENGER PI Sean Solomon in last night’s blog. That’ll teach me to write when I am exhausted. yeah right [porchdragon]

@MmogamerFr definitely! [porchdragon]
![]() |
@gardenglen hope they understood that science teachers could be taking part in the science through these tools! [porchdragon]
![]() |
@MmogamerFr orbit will be from 200-500 km at lowest pt up to 15,200 km at farthest point. Very elliptical orbit [porchdragon]

Newest MESSENGER Science team update-During unexpected signal drop earlier craft was not in normal operating mode-Downlink will B delayed [porchdragon]
![]() |
If any of you have questions about MESSENGER Feel free to ask them! [porchdragon]
![]() |
Here’s a huge shout out to all my new followers. Seems like there are a lot of ppl who want to know about MESSENGER. Thanks 4 following me [porchdragon]
![]() |
First images from MESSENGER will be published on Wednesday at 10AM [porchdragon]
![]() |
Well I am back online again after getting dinner. Have to admit-the flyby earlier got a little more tense than last year’s… [porchdragon]
![]() |
@ThilinaH any time! [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Room508AESchool Hello! fell free toi ask any questions about MESSENGER over the next couple of days! [porchdragon]
![]() |
Going to have to leave Mission Operation center for the night. I will be back online in abut an hour. Not much going on till the morning. [porchdragon]
![]() |
right now MESSENGER is just “beeping” to us. at 9:34EST the real telemetry starts [porchdragon]
![]() |
@turrean and you are the penultimate?? [porchdragon]
![]() |
We lost doppler signal measurements which would have given us gravity measurements. Its 2 bad since it would have been the closest msrmnts [porchdragon]
![]() |
We lost a couple of minutes of science data but that’s all we know for now [porchdragon]
![]() |
YAY we have contact with MESSENGER!!! [porchdragon]
![]() |
about 5 minutes left before known Blackout should end. then our fingers are crossed… [porchdragon]
![]() |
![]() |
@lindseyb16 Thanks! :^) [porchdragon]
![]() |
![]() |
@ThilinaH Most data will be analyzed for about 4-6 months before being made public [porchdragon]
![]() |
Did you Know? MESSENGER talks to the Deep Space Network of antennae around the world.Australia, Spain, and california have antennae 2 listen [porchdragon]
![]() |
Gotta say, that as a teacher,U can’t beat being here @ ground zero 4 a little drama w/ MESSENGER. I have butterflies in my stomache [porchdragon]
![]() |
Current theory about the drop in signal is that MESSENGER started using wrong antenna to communicate 4 some reason [porchdragon]
![]() |
@ScienceDome lol. Gotta check with the IAU for that! [porchdragon]
![]() |
want to see what MESSENGER is doing right now(as long as everything is ok) Check out http://messenger.jhuapl.edu/encountersm3/index.php [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Maggiemoo0422 Current plan is 8-9AM for image upload to the web. [porchdragon]
![]() |
@queechies Find experiences like this to take part in.This is amazing 4 a teacher.I have the jitters jst watching the scientists right now [porchdragon]
![]() |
Just heard that MESSENGER is also looking for tiny moons around Mercury. There is a chance we have not detected something small before this [porchdragon]
![]() |
@unklar Thank you. this is an amazing opportunity. Everyone should try to do this! [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Maggiemoo0422 Photos will start coming tonight. We will look at them and start posting them tomorrow [porchdragon]
![]() |
I just got the link to the newspaper article about me back home! http://tinyurl.com/y9hb5lx [porchdragon]
![]() |
Boy this is nervewracking.Science team decided NOT to do anything B4 the occultation since there was little time. Now we wait till 7pm [porchdragon]
![]() |
@elakdawalla your interpretation is correct. Now we wait till this occultation is over to see if it gets fixed [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Nancy_A blackout that happened wasnt the expected one.Now it is in an expected BO but we won’t be able 2 find anything out until 51 mins [porchdragon]
![]() |
Now we are in the expected radio blackout so there is no way of knowing what happened a few minutes ago. We have to wait 51 minutes [porchdragon]
![]() |
@cascadilla_NY It will loop around the sun until it comes back to Mercury and into orbit in 2011 [porchdragon]
![]() |
wow the atmosphere definitely just changed [porchdragon]
![]() |
Suddenly room got quiet and ppl hovering near computers. Unexpected signal drop just occurred. Sense of nervousness seems to have happened. [porchdragon]
![]() |
Sense of scale: If Earth was on 1 wall of your classroom. & Mercury on a wall 10m (30ft) away. MESSENGER would be within a hair of Mercury [porchdragon]
![]() |
Did you Know? The Earth and Mercury are currently near the same magnetic Flux line from the Sun [porchdragon]
![]() |
@cascadilla_NY Feel Free to ask any questions. I work with the Cornell Institute of Physics Teachers also. That’s how i knew your name [porchdragon]
![]() |
At closest approach MESSENGER will be traveling at 30 miles per second relative 2 Earth. At that rate it could cross the Earth in 1min 20 sec [porchdragon]
![]() |
MESSENGER will go behind Mercury and will be eclipsed from Earth for a while. After that it will continue talking to NASA [porchdragon]
![]() |
@cascadilla_NY Thx for the follow. you must be from near Cornell, right? [porchdragon]
![]() |
This place is crazy.Currently 30+ ppl in room all talking excitedly. You can’t hear yourself think [porchdragon]
![]() |
RT: @MESSENGER2011: I started preparing gamma-ray and neutron spectrometers for detailed observations. See http://bit.ly/3nOuZs [porchdragon]
![]() |
RT: @doctorjeff: WE ARE NOW LESS THAN AN EARTH DIAMETER ABOVE SURFACE OF MERCURY, screaming toward it @ 2 miles per SECOND.U getting this? [porchdragon]
![]() |
RT: @doctorjeff: We’re 7,400 miles above the Mercurian surface, heading to an altitude of 142 miles (228 km) at close approach. [porchdragon]
![]() |
RT: @doctorjeff: We are now an hour out.Let me situate everyone.MESSENGER is moving at about 3 km/sec (2 miles per sec) relative to Mercury. [porchdragon]
![]() |
@Joi_the_Artist PLEASE say that to ppl you know -especially at NASA and schools. We think we are the 1st major program 2 do this w/teachers [porchdragon]
![]() |
MESSENGER is taking all of its pics and data retrieving but will send data back later [porchdragon]
