I want to welcome the 100+ new followers that I have gained in just the past few days. Hope you are enjoying my MESSENGER Flyby coverage [porchdragon]

We use crater counts 2 tell us planets age.Recent volcanic activity would’ve erased craters so we feel that we have a good etsimate of age [porchdragon]
|
|
listening to a new way to figure age of Mercury’s surface [porchdragon]
|
|
Interesting images of tectonic features. [porchdragon]
|
|
Scarps are created when planet cools and part of surface “falls” leaving incredible tall cliffs. These scarps can cut right through craters [porchdragon]
|
|
seeing more evidence of lobate scarps on Mercury. “Mercury: The Incredible Shrinking Planet!” [porchdragon]
|
|
shadow studies are an important for planetary science understanding. And a lot of it is basic trig [porchdragon]
|
|
Important to note that looking at the terminator(day/night) line on a planet helps see small details because shadows are so long [porchdragon]
|
|
Currently looking at a “depression” seen in the new images [porchdragon]
|
|
some ppl(like me) can make a crater seem to “pop” into a hill just by concentrating [porchdragon]
|
|
Try this. Look at any crater image from moon or mercury and turn pic around. Craters seem to”pop” out and become hills. Well known illusion [porchdragon]
|
|
looking at images. Love doing the crater/mountain illusion with images [porchdragon]
|
|
looking at first mosaics of images and heightened color images of Mercury [porchdragon]
|
|

Important note: MESSENGER is safe.It did what it was supposed 2 do & went into Safemode 2 make sure nothing bad happened.Now we figure out Y [porchdragon]

Except for the poles we now have images of the entire body of Mercury. Only 5% left 2 image @ poles [porchdragon]

A little less than 1/2 of “extra” science goals 4 flyby was accomplished. So we just got a little less icing on our “Flyby Cake” [porchdragon]

from briefing:Flyby’s major goal of gravity assist was a total success. As was getting images of 5% of Mercury never seen before! [porchdragon]

From new briefing: MESSENGER went into safemode when it entered Mercury’s shadow & tried to switch 2 battery power. [porchdragon]

Ustream is fixed now so that my 2pm EST video broadcast WILL work [porchdragon]

MESSENGER will go behind Mercury and will be eclipsed from Earth for a while. After that it will continue talking to NASA [porchdragon]
